Elections for 2015 and Christmas Party 2014!

The elections for the Officers of Iligan Lodge No. 207 for the MY 2014 are as follows:

Worshipful Master - Bro. Pat D. Noel
Senior Warden - Bro. Ivan Banaag
Junior Warden - Bro. Alykhan Ali
Treasurer - WB Jimmy Magnetico
Secretary - VW Warly Sanguila
Auditor - WB Ali Bari

The elections for the Junior Warden was quite close as it started with 6 names, then down to 3 names and finally to 2 names.  Bro. Alykhan Ali emerged finally as the choice of the Brethren.  Thank you for the trust and confidence shown to the elected officers.

The Lodge will be attending the 118th Rizal Day Commemorative Program at the Rizal Park at 7 o'clock in the morning after which all the Brethren of the District will meet at the UDLMC for the Workshop, Proficiency and Seminar for everyone interested especially those who are elected officers for the ensuing term.

After a suspenseful elections, we had a Christmas Party held at the function hall of the UDLMC and it was fun with lots of singing.  The program though short was filled with laughter. A singing contest then followed which was participated by 8 brothers from different lodges.  A small love token was then given to the beloved wives of our departed brethren of Iligan Lodge No. 207.

Bulletin and Notice of Meeting December 20, 2014

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST

WB Ali M. Bari
Worshipful Master

Brethren:

Greetings and May the Grand Architect of the Universe bless us and our loved ones with good health.

The fever of the Christmas season is with us now.  I am sure you are all hearing the usual songs for the season.  It also set to me, that my term as your Master of the Iligan Lodge No. 207 is about to end.  I wish to reiterate my dream that we should all work to bring back our lodge into what it signify in this district.

Our program Bring-a-Friend was received satisfactorily by those we invited, that at least three (3) gave their petition for the degrees of Masonry to the Secretary.  We have now seven (7) petitioners, hopefully to join us next year.   I just regretted that  not one was voted favorably in our lodge, hopefully next year will boast our desire to resuscitate our lodge to more active activities that will make masonry more relevant in our time and the future.

Lastly, let me thank all the brethren who supported us in our journey this year.  Bro. Pat Noel, Senior Warden and Bro. Ivan Banaag, Junior Warden gave their best to make our journey worth remembering.

TOGETHER BRETHREN let us make once more Iligan Lodge No. 207 the jewel of the Masonic District!

The 21st WESTMINCON to be held in Zamboanga City, October 3-4, 2014 is fast approaching.   Iligan Lodge No. 207 shall be represented by 6 brethren.  They will leave on October 3.  I asked the brethren of the lodge to join us if they find time to do so.

The Fiesta of Iligan City is also on the "go" with the various activities prepared for this occasion.  Some of these activities started to be implemented earlier.  Our Senior Warden, Bro. Pat D. Noel is in front of some of these activities being part of the Tourism Department of the City.  Let us all response to the call of the City Mayor.

The proposed BRING-A-FRIEND program was postponed to November 22, 2014 at the request of WB Vic Mariano to give more time to the resource persons to prepare.   Since we are inviting non-Masons, let us show o them that masonry is alive in Iligan City by attending this important program.  It will be a pleasure to all of us, in the lodge in particular, and the Grand Lodge officers of the district in general.

TOGETHER BRETHREN let us make once more Iligan Lodge No. 207 the jewel of the Masonic District!

The First District Convention held last 9 August 2014 was very successful for once more, it renewed the harmony in our district.   The whole process of the convention was held on time.  RW Tomas G. Rentoy III, Deputy Grand Master of Masons graced the affair; with Hon. Mamintal A. Adiong, Jr. the Provincial Governor of Lanao del Sur as the Guest of Honor and Speaker.  The Junior Grand Lecturer, WV Conrad Lim was in attendance.  There were 122 brethren registered on this convention, our lodge was officially represented by 22 members, second highest registered lodge.  The highlight of the convention was the nomination of Junior Grand Warden from our district.  WB OSCAR V. BADELLES, Past Master of Iligan Lodge No. 207 was the unanimous choice of the brethren.  After the closing of the convention, bowling fun tournament was held at the Midtown Bowling Lane.  The overall champion was Lake Lanao Lodge 227, followed by Rajah Indarapatra Lodge 387.  Congratulation to our Marawi brethren!

Our Bring-a-Frined program was postponed to September 20, 2014.  This will give more time in the preparation of the program inasmuch as we are inviting non-masons to join us in this affair.

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST

WB Ali M. Bari
Worshipful Master

Brethren:

Greetings and may the Grand Architect of the Universe bless us and our loved ones with good health.

The first District Convention of Masonic District RX-D and ARMM is scheduled on August 9.  It was agreed that each lodge in the district shall at least register 20 members to this convention.  I appeal to the brethren to support this activity.  The convention shall put some times on the exemplification of the opening and closing of a Master Mason lodge using the amended Monitor.  After the formal activity, the inter lodge Bowling fun games shall follow.  The registration of the brethren is PhP600.00 which will take care of our two snacks and lunch and other materials.  Each lodge shall pay PhP1,000.00 for this bowling activity.

The Secretary is finalizing the Bring-a-Friend program which is scheduled on our stated meeting August 16, 2014.  This will be a district activity and it was the idea of many brethren that all the petitioners of lodges shall attend this activity.

The attendance of the brethren to our stated meeting is a joy to me and I hope that my Iligan Lodge 207 brethren shall continuously support lodge and its programs.

TOGETHER BRETHREN let us make once more Iligan Lodge No. 207 the jewel of the Masonic District!

Past Masters Night / DDGM's Turn-over Ceremonies

How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together...for the past Masters Night and the DDGM's Turn-over Ceremonies.  It is like...what happened in Iligan Lodge No. 207 last May 17, 2014.

Iligan Lodge No. 207's anniversary was during the previous month of April, but due to the preparation for the Ancom, the lodge opted to do it on the following month during the stated meeting for the month of May and it turned out to be one of the lodge's highlight of the year - RW Tomas G. Rentoy III, the Deputy Grand Master of Masons of the Philippines was present to celebrate it with us and to witness the turn-over ceremony of the District Deputy Grand Master VW Eduardo Ulindang to the present DDGM VW Feliciano Alagao.

RW Rentoy was very much impressed with the ceremonies that he informed the district that there was a plan of scrapping the ceremonies because some districts are doing it without giving importance to the position...like just doing it anywhere they please...in a restaurant or elsewhere where they are having fellowship.  Which to him was just any ordinary fellowship because they forgot the importance of the position of the office.  So when he witnessed how RX-D & Armm (Lanao) went through the event, he highly suggested that the whole jurisdiction of the GLP adopt the way we do it.  Leading the right way, the proper way.  The pictures below showed how it was done and what happen right after.

Bulletin and Notice of Meeting June 21, 2014

Message from the Worshipful Master
Bro. Ali M. Bari

My Dear Brethren,

Greetings of peace and may the Great Architect of the Universe bless us and our families.

This month, we joined the City of Iligan in the celebration of the Independence Day last June 12.  Masons in their regalia march from the lodge to the City Rizal Plaza for the program.  WB Cesar Miguel of Maranaw Lodge 111 delivered the "Salute to the Flag" and VW Feliciano Alagao, DDGM assisted Mayor Celso Regencia in the raising of the Philippine flag.

Last June 16, 2014, the Masonic District participated in the Civic-Military Parade in the observance of the "Araw ng Iligan".   The Iligan Shriners provided the clown, distributing candies along the way.  At the end of these activities, a sumptuous breakfast was provided by the district.

We are now halfway of the masonic year and I am still looking to our different programs for the community.  We are finalizing our "Adopt-a-School" program.  We request the brethren of Iligan Lodge No. 207 to support this activity.  We also hope to implement the "Bring-a-Friend" program of the district in August, our visit to our sister Lodge, the L.T. Pañares Lodge 220 on September, Widows and Orphans celebration in October and the Beehive recognition in November.

Lastly, we thank the Brethren for the support in the visit of RW Tomas G. Rentoy III, Deputy Grand Master of Masonic in this jurisdiction last month.

TOGETHER BRETHREN let us make once more Iligan Lodge No. 207 the Jewel of the Masonic District!

Obelisk and Freemasonry

by Bro. Carlo Reynaldo F. Lozada, Jr.
     District Executive Assistant, R13-A

Sometimes associated with Masonry, yet the obelisk is not counted among the Masonic symbols.  But a long history lies behind the fascination on this plain but ancient stone piece.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Freemasonry, as we know it now, only started sometime in the 17th century.  This was the time of Renaissance when people had begun questioning the church, monarchy and the prevailing societal norms in general.   Freemasonry was then a way to become a "free thinker".

Thus, to Freemasons, groping for mystic enlightenment in the 1800s, the obelisk was the only architectural symbol of Egyptian deity Osiris still in existence.  Obelisk mania had already swept into Freemasonry by the time Napoleon  Bonaparte set sail for Egypt in 1798.  Whether he was Mason or not is still disputed.  But his four brothers certainly were.   He was also encircled by Masonic advisors who had convinced him that Egypt held original secrets of history, philosophy and of course, Freemsonry.  Masons figured among the 150 scholars who had joined the emperor on his triumphant Nile progress, pillaging pyramids, temples and toms all in the name of learning.

They instantly realized that the Rosetta Stone might unlock the lost language of Egypt.  Deciphering the engraved hieroglyphs had taken many years and the genius of Jean-Francois  Champollion.  Yet, he even needed the help of an obelisk bearing Cleopatra's cartouche, which had been removed for shipment to England in 1818 by a Masonic adventurer, Giovanni Battista Belzoni.

Belzoni was a mountebank archeologist who opened up the temple of Abu Simbel and the Second Pyramid of Giza.  He begun his Masonic career in Cairo, appropriately, the Lodge of the Pyramids and joined lodges in Cambridge and Norwich.  He died in 1825, searching for "Timbuctoo" or the source of the Niger.   But not before he did Freemasonry an inestimable service by claiming to have discovered an ancient Masonic Temple in Thebes.  He claimed its wall paintings showed Osiris being initiated into Freemasonry, pursuing its sublime mysteries and clad in a distinctive Masonic apron and awarding other masons a higher degree.

After Belzoni died, his wife, Sarah transcribed his notes, including this declaration,  "Let the Masonic brethren search, and they will find, that the Egyptian Masonic key will unlock the hitherto unrevealed mysteries of Egyptian wisdom."   No matter that his Masonic temple turned out to be the tomb of Pharaoh Seti I, and that all he (or Sarah) had written where bunkum, Masons at that time felt they owed much to Belzoni.  His Masonic "discoveries" sent packs of them off to Egypt in search of obelisks to plunder.

Paris was the first major European city to fall for this Masonic fad.  In 1830, the Viceroy of Egypt, Mohamed Ali, gave France's King Charles X a magnificent obelisk which was 3,500 years old and weighed 246 tons at a height of 92 feet.  It still stands at Plaza de la  Concorde today.  Another obelisk was given to England.  It weighed 186 tons.

It now stands at the Victoria Embankment along River Thames.  this is known as one of "Cleopatra's Needle".

The news that English Masons had succeeded in erecting Cleopatra's Needle encouraged American Masons to ship its twin across the Atlantic.  The Obelisk was given to America in 1877.  But 2 years had passed before it had been done.  It weighed 220 tons.

It now stands at Central Park, New York, USA.  More obelisks then sprouted all over the world in localities where Masons were present.  The more famous is the George Washington Monument, the first president of the USA.

Yet, not all Obelisks are Masonic symbols.  Rome ahs about 11 where most have been brought from Egypt by ancient emperors who were deluded by grandeur.  Caligula's obelisk now stands at the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church capital, at St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.  It was Pope Sixtus V who was responsible for the erection of this 132-ft and 320-ton obelisk.

Churches of other Christian denominations likewise utilized the obelisk in their structure.   "Obelisks were considered tasteful, with pure uplifting lines, associated with ancient greatness, patriotic, able to be used in relatively small spaces, and perhaps most importantly, obelisks were less costly than large and elaborate sculpted monuments.   There were many cultural reasons for the revival style of the 19th century.   Freemasonry while part of the overall cultural influence, was not responsible for the prevalence of obelisks." (Macdowell and Meyer - "The Revival Styles in American Memorial Art")

Here in the Philippines, the most famous obelisks are that of Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio monuments in Rizal Park and Caloocan-Monumento, respectively.  In fact the silhouette/outline of the Rizal monument is present in the vehicle license plates.  Clearly this particular design in the plates has no Masonic connotation at all.

Nowhere can you find the word "obelisks" in our Monitor, landmarks, Constitution, by-laws, ordinances and edicts.  It may be associated with Freemasonry.  But it is by no means a Masonic symbol, nor exclusive to the Craft.
